This picture from the magazine Glamour shows four very different women in the same swimsuit.  This magazine has been trying to show many different types of bodies throughout their pages to prove that there is more than one type of pretty.  And this picture is proof.  All four of these women are gorgeous.  Of course we all have our opinions, some people like their girls thick, some like them skinny.  There are people who would choose one of these girls over another.  But you can't deny that they aren't all pretty.  I think the best selling point is that all of them seem happy, and confident.  Showing girls of different sizes, with barely any clothes, and confidence in their bodies will provide a positive image to young girls, and show them that any type of body is acceptable.

  1. I really think that you truly have a great blog. This is a very important issue as many girls today care way too much about losing an extra 10 pounds when they already weigh 120, just to see their collar bones. Body image is not something that is easy to maintain and especially in college when people are so judgmental and critical of people who may not be a size 2. The media has such an influence on the way people view themselves as if they have to live up to society's standards. I think that everyone is beautiful inside and out no matter what size or shape you may be. Everyone is perfect just the way they are.

    1. Thank you! And yes, it's not just the media, other people can hurt us too. People get made fun of for the silliest things.

  2. Great Blog. I think it is so important that young girls realize that what they see in a magazine or on the screen has been altered. If they were to see a celebrity in public with normal clothes and normal make up they would probably not recognize them. Keep up the good work.

  3. Thank you! It's so very important to understand that they go through hours of make up and physical changes, and are photoshopped.

  4. Great blog! I like your inclusion of links and a lot of pictures! Specifically, I liked that at the end of this entry you included the Dove campaign pictures of "real" women.

  5. I love this picture! And the whole idea of this blog. It is so crucial that we teach young girls that the media is harmful and that no one truly looks like they do on TV or in the magazines. I personally have seen the negative effects because I used to teach a middle school girls small group. And they were all constantly worried about how boys perceived them. They were constantly making sure they had the right make or clothes or if they needed to work out more. It is so sad because they are only in middle school.

    1. Thank you for sharing that. It is sad, middle schoolers shouldn't be worried about how they appear to guys, they should be having fun and enjoying life.

  6. I completely agree - my question is what should we do about it? Would it help for the media to be more transparent about how they change photos?

    1. I think no matter what, even if the pictures have a giant flashing light saying that it is fake, they will still have a negative effect.
